One of the most successful teams of the Fall season has been the girl's
varsity soccer team. The team played hard and put together a great season. They
finished the regular season with an impressive 10-2-1 record.
Then came the playoffs, where the Lady Patriot's beat Westlake in the opening
round. In the second round, the team defeated Leonardtown by the score of 1-0.
County rival Calvert came next in the third round. This proved to be a showdown
between two highly skilled and well-versed teams. The end result was a tough,
hard-fought loss. The team battled hard for four quarters and came up just
short, losing by the score of 4-0. Anna Miek Devos stated, "I was disappointed
that we were eliminated early in the season, but overall we had a great season."
Despite the loss, the girl's soccer team provided fans with a season filled with
victories. The team was headed by a group of athletic playmakers. Jamie Craft
fueled the team with her tremendous talent and fierce play. Craft will go down
as probably the greatest soccer player ever at Northern. During four years on
the varsity squad, she amassed over 100 goals, solidifying her as one of the
greatest player's in S.M.A.C. history.
The success this year could not have happened without other playmakers. Head
coach Jay Loveless stated, "the girls did very well. They displayed great
ability and team play." The defense was one of the strong points of this
season's squad. Senior goalie Brianna Jones led the defense. She amassed several
shutout's over her career, and was a key factor for this year's tremendous
season. Senior captains Christina Loveless and Kristy Keller provided leadership
as well as intense play.
The success of this season's team may be carried on by a strong core of
underclassmen returning next year. These players provide a bright future for the
team.
